Development:-
Before the novel was published in 2000, Miramax Films, which was owned by The Walt Disney Company at the time, purchased the film rights with Tribeca Productions. In 2001, it was announced that the series would be made into a movie. Lawrence Guterman was signed on to direct, Jeff Stockwell would write, and Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal would be producing. Eoin Colfer said in 2003 that a screenplay was finished and that casting would start the same year, but he was skeptical about whether or not this would happen. Due to disputes over the rights between The Walt Disney Company and Harvey and Bob Weinstein, who were leaving Miramax, the film remained in development hell. Jim Sheridan, his daughter Naomi Sheridan, and Colfer co-wrote a non-commissioned screenplay during this time. In 2011, it was reported that Jim Sheridan was negotiating to direct the movie and had met with Saoirse Ronan to discuss the possibility of her appearing in it.
Walt Disney Pictures made the announcement in July 2013 that they would produce a film based on the first and second books in the Artemis Fowl series with The Weinstein Company. Michael Goldenberg would write the screenplay.
Variety reported on September 1, 2015, that Irish playwright Conor McPherson had been hired by Disney to write the screenplay, and that Branagh, Harvey Weinstein, and Judy Hofflund had been hired as producers. Following the disclosure of Weinstein's felony sexual misconduct, Disney terminated its production partnership with The Weinstein Company and removed Weinstein as producer of the film on September 12, 2017, and announced that the adaptation would be released on August 9, 2019.
Casting:-
On September 18, 2017, it was said that Judi Dench was talking about a role that was not mentioned. Ferdia Shaw, an Irish newcomer who is the grandson of Robert Shaw, was cast in the role of Artemis Fowl II on December 20, 2017, along with Dench in the role of Commander Root, Josh Gad in the role of Mulch Diggums, Lara McDonnell in the role of Captain Holly Short, and Nonso Anozie in the role of Butler. During reshoots, Colin Farrell was cast as Artemis Fowl I, and the role was made clear in the second trailer in March 2020.
Given that the character in the book series is described as having dark nut-brown skin of a coffee complexion, McDonnell's casting as Short led to accusations of whitewashing. In a similar vein, the casting of Anozie as Butler was criticized due to the fact that the books portray him as an Eurasian who can pass for Japanese or Russian; In addition, Anozie's casting of the character was seen as embodying several stereotypes of African Americans and African-Americans, particularly the "scary black man" and "black servant" tropes, due to the character's physical description of frightening anyone in his presence and his family's history of serving the Fowl family for centuries.
As an extra, author Eoin Colfer made a cameo appearance in the film. "I walked across a field with a lot of other people," Colfer said of his one scene, which was shot in Northern Ireland. Although I did make a few mistakes, it wasn't too difficult. They only gave one direction: Don't look at the camera as you walk across the field. About 20 times did I look at the camera. I now respect actors more."
Filming:-
Principal photography began on March 12, 2018, and filming began that day. The Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Italy, and Vietnam served as locations for the film's production. Fowl Manor was constructed at Longcross Studios in Surrey and was intended to be used for sequel production; however, by May 2020, it had been demolished. Colfer has stated that he supports the numerous modifications that were made to the original material.
Release:-
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures originally planned for the film to open in theaters on August 9, 2019. According to Vulture, "given Disney's continuing commitment to theatrical openings for its mega budget event films... it's impossible to read Artemis Fowl's Disney+ debut as anything other than an abandonment of faith." Later, however, the film's theatrical release was canceled and it was exclusively released on Disney+ on June 12, 2020." Variety reported in November 2020 that the movie was the 18th most watched straight-to-streaming title of 2020 up to that point.
